The participants dance at the rhythm of Afro-Brazilian drums. That dance symbolizes a fight between some men for a woman. The woman-dancer’s clothes are typical of Baίa’s tradition. The dance is colorful, melting seduction, joy and vivacity. Samba is a rhythm native from Africa, more precisely from Angola. It comes from the mount « Semba », a word Guimbundo (the language of Bantus tribes). It was brought to Brazil by black people during slavery. Its origin is debated because many people interpret Samba as a contraction of « Risembas » (navel’s dance). Others explain it with the word « kusamba », which means « to pray, to ask something to the divinities ». The origins are various, each possibility gives a different conclusion and everyone is free to adopt his own opinion. Today, Samba is taught in Samba’s schools, it is still inspired by Samba de Roda but evolves in a festive way. Samba is transmitted from a generation to the next. In Samba de Roda, stories are told and sung through passing time.

Samba de roda is an entertaining and animated manifestation, in which several persons form a circle or a half-circle.
